Providing 3-D steel detailing models as a deliverable saves significant time, better defines scope
of the intended construction, and reduces questions and miscommunications.
Steel detailing models typically start with member models, which can be used to create mill orders
and advanced bill of materials to allow the purchase of steel earlier in the design cycle. No need for
an estimator to pore over drawings doing take offs by hand. These models have the main structural
steel framing members, with material properties and correct orientations, ready for use by the
fabricator.
In the second step, our integrated modeling group collaborates with our design team to add connections
to the model. The output from this step is an electronic file that contains a 3-D model
ready for use by the steel fabricator to create Computer Numerical Control (CNC) downloads for
use by the fabrication equipment. Physical drawings, such as shop piece and assembly drawings,
erection plans, erection details, and field bolt lists can be created from the model.
By defining connections in the model additional time can be saved by the reduction of the shop
drawing and approval time. Also, the true scope of the intended construction is more clearly defined.
These benefits can be attained for steel projects large or small.
